Authorized route: You get a dedicated application engineer who knows the product line. Many distributors offer free phone support and on-site training sessions included in the purchase price. One phone call, 15 minutes, problem solved.
Non-authorized route: “We don’t offer support, but here’s a PDF manual.” Or you pay $150/hour for a third-party technician who may not understand ABB’s fine print. I’ve seen a client spend 8 hours on a fault code that an ABB-trained tech could have cleared in 20 minutes. That’s $1,200 in labor wasted.

So When Would You Choose Non-Authorized?

- Internal test/jig use – for non-production, low-criticality applications where failure doesn’t hurt.
- Very tight budget with in-house expertise – if your engineer can rebuild and program the drive themselves, and you accept the risk.
For 95% of industrial applications, authorized is the right call. The cost controller in me hates paying more upfront, but the accountant in me loves looking at a $0 line for unexpected failures.
